BOARD OF EDUCATION.
j The ordinary meeting of the Auckland Board of Education this afternoon was attended by Mr It.. Hobbs (chairman), Dr. McArthur, Messrs S. Luke, L. Eagnall, J. Muir, It, Farrell, and .1. R. Reed. The reports of the Chairman, the Finance Committee, and selection of teachers committee were adopted as follow: — Chairman's Report.—The chairman in his report stated that the following j schools had been closed temporarily on acc'cunt of the prevalence of epidemic: — Maungaturoto, Mokau, Otaua (Waiuku), and Puhoi. The school at Te Puke (No. 1) had been temporarily closed during- completion of enlargement of building. Selection of Teachers.—The report of the Teachers Selection Committee was as follows:—"(1) Your committee recommend that the following appointments should be authorised by the Board:—Mr R. H. Walton to be teacher of Opouriao South school; Mr H. B. Lusk to be second assistant master Beresford-street school; Miss A. Christy to be sewing teacher Omohu school; Miss M. Rountree to be sewing teacher Waikieki*- schools. (2) Your committee recommend that qualified pupil 'teachers be supplied to the following schools: —Opouriao North, Otumoetai, Waitangi. (3) Your committee recommend that the Taupo school committee be consulted in regard to the proposed appointment of Mr C. H. 0. Tobin as teacher, instead of the name previously submitted to them. (4) Your committee recommend that the services of the sewing teachers at the undernamed schools should be dispensed with in view of the employment of female teachers thereat: —Flat Bush, Hobsonville, Kaeo, Mayfield, Papakura Valley No. 1., Te Pahi No. II."
1 Finance. —The Finance Committee s , report'included the following:—"Your committee recommend payment of the following accounts which have been duly examined and initialled: — Board Fund, SGSO7 19/6; Building Fund, £459 18/6. Your committee recommend that detailed list of building requirements should be forwarded to the Minister, with a request for an increased grant to cover the cost of the same. Your committee recomixiencl that the memorial for the establishment of a central school at Tuakau should be referred to the inspector for his report. Your commiltt_e recommend that the adjustment of salaries of first assistant In. alters, infant teachers, and assistants for the current quarter should jbe made according to scale based up!on the working' average attendance. 'Your committee have considered a re!quest from the chief inspector for the ! employment of assistant' instructors of the Saturday classes for pupil teachers in Latin, French, and mathematics, #nd recommend:—(l) That grant of £12 a year be voted for the payment of an assistant instructor in each of the three subjects named. (2) That the chief inspector be aslced to report as to the expediency of abolishing the Saturday classes for the extra instruction o£ pupil teach-
