TRADE DISPUTES

ARBITEATION COUET DECISIONS

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, this day,

The award of the Arbitration Court in the painters' dispute giyes the men a slight increase, along with-overtime rates, and preference to unionists. A new feature of these awards is that for the first time it is provided there shall be no compulsory insurance against accidents, and masters may not make deductions from wages for this purpose. In the furniture trade the old award was practically renewed. In-the moulders' dispute, a few of the men get small increases, but on the whole the wages remain the same as now, with preference to unionists.

In the carpenters' dispute, six employers were brought into the award, with costs £1 1/ each against three.

The Court sits at Auckland on Thursday, and at New Plymouth on the 18th. ■ -■:■■ , T

In the action against Eizzi,,owner of the "Alexandra Plumbing Works, the Arbitration Court held that there had been a serious breach of the award. The Court was unanimous that where it could be shown and proved what amount was saved by disregarding an award, a penalty of equal amount, should be inflicted. Penalties in all totalling £21 5/ were inflicted, with £7 7/ costs to the Union, and costs of witnesses and of the Court. In a case against H. McCarthy, baker, the Court held a breach of the award proved and imposed a penalty of 40/, with.Union costs £5 5/, and Court and witnesses fees.

With respect to a contention raised In this case that the award clashed ■with the half-holiday law, the Court said the point ought to have been raised when the award was being considered. No notice could now be taken of it, but it might be found desirable to amend the act to enable the Court to modify awards during their currency, it was however, argument for mitigation of the penalty, and accordingly only a light penalty was inliicted. ■ U-^.-L-.J-i^.-
