PONSONBY SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the Ponsonby District School Committee was held last evening, when there were present Messrs W. j. Ke'ea (chairman), C. J.. Parr, Dearsley, Becroft, Fawcus, Taylor, Turner, Swales, and Rev. A. H. Collins. The annual repOrt and balance-sheet to be submitted at the annual meeting were read and approved of. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £35. Satisfaction wa3 expressed with the excellent building erected by the Board as an infant school in Church-street, and it was resolved to contribute £10 towards forming a play. ground at the school. A complaint was received from a parent that his child attending the Church-street school had been punished for faulty home lessons by being detained during the lunch hour. A dis* cussion ensued, and it appeared to be the urianimbus opinion of the Committee that home lessons should not be imposed on children, particularly such subjects as arithmetic. It was resolved.'That in view Of the manifold evils arising from the present standard system of examinations, as appearing to this Committee, the Ponsonby School Committee is of opinion that the time has arrived when such system of standard examinations should be abolished and a more rational system adopted.' It was resolved to send a copy of this resolution to the Board of Education. The lowest tender for the erection of the new Richmond Road school was stated to be that of Mr Bloomfield, £?2fl, and the adoption of this tender was approved of. It is anticipated that when the new building is erected it will maka the Richmond Road school one of tha most modern and best schools in Auckland.
