POLICE COURT.—THIS DAY.
At the Police Court this morning John Duinn was charged on remand with 'stealing l-Jlbs of tobacco, valued at 9/,. the property of some person unknown. The case had buen adjourned to allow accused to call witnesses to prove he came by. the tobacco honestly. Three witnesses were called, but each denied having given or ' sold any tobacco to Dunn. The latter then asked that a man named Joseph Winters at present in Mt. Eden gaol might be called. Accused stated on oath that Winters could give material evidence in the case, and His Worship accordingly gave the necessary authority for having the man brought as a witness, the case being meanwhile adjourned. Mary Smith \va;- fined 10/ for drunkenness; John Willey, drunk and disorder^-, 20/; two first offending inebriates being convicted and discharged. Charges of vagrancy against William Moar, Frank Eyder Davis, John O'Connor, and John Herrington were adjourned till Monday, bail being allowed on prisoners' application. A similar remand was granted to Jeremiah Driscoll, charged with stealing £2 6/ belonging to Timothy Hayes on April 4th, at Ellerslie, and using indecent language at the same place. Frederick Henry Rimmer, charged with stealing £.2 4/ worth of clothes belonging to Joseph Ehrman, was remanded till the 7th inst.
Jos. Roache was fined 5/, with costs ?/, for carrying three passengers in a hansom, a vehicle licensed to carry only two.
