CHINESE RAILWAYS.

A TIMELY WARNING

(By Telegraph. —Own Correspondent.)

WELLINGTON, this day.

The Government has received a cova- ' munication from the Colonial Secretary of Singapore warning persons in New Zealand arid Australia against going to Malay in the hope of obtain-. : ing employment on the railways there, or on those projected in China, unless they have secured a prior engagement 4 and possess sufficient means to defray their passages back to the colonies in ;■;■ the event of disappointment. The • communication further states that the journey is long and expensive, and if they fail there are no agencies or | . means to assist them to return. This warning has been issued owing to the fact that many persons rendered sanguine by the cabled reports of contemplated railway works on a very r large scale in various parts of China have rushed away to the Malay Peninsula and Singapore in the hope of v securing employment, but, being dis- ' appointed, have found themselves stranded in a strange country and de- L pendent on the charity of their fel- • low countrymen. A good many of th's railway concessions reported have not ~ yet been practically utilised, and most of them are 'in futuro.' The Russians - and other foreign nations employ only < their own subjects.
