BENEVOLENT SOCIETY'S CARNIVAL.

The Carnival of the Auckland Ladies' Benevolent Society was opened this afternoon, in the Exbibitituji Buildings. The No. 2 Court has been brought into requisition for the purpose, and those who saw it in its bare dismantled state of yesterday >vill marvel at the transformation wrought in a few hours. They were busy hours, though, for the Ladies Committee and their staff of assistants. All morning the ladies were busily engaged decorating the building, fitting un the kiosks and attending to the thousand and one details connected with an entertainment of this kind; while workmen were preparing the floor for the dance on Thursday evening, erect; ing platforms and clearing away her lated fragments of the Exhibition. Draped with flags and decorated with a profusion of ferns and foliage, the Court now presents an appearance that reflects no little credit on the Committee and the young ladies who volunteered their services. Kiosks. have been fitted up in vacant stalls on either side of the Court, and Messrs L. D. Nathan's kiosk in No. 1 Court " has also been made use of. At ohS/*' end of the Court a small stage hat been erected for a minstrel performance, and at the other end the handsome bay that was occupied by Alesgrfl Sargood, Son and Ewen has been in% . geniously converted into a stage for^ tableaux. The adjoining stand of ' Hayward Bros., lined with plateglass, has been utilised as a concert platform. The cookei-y and floral ex-<. hibits are displayed to advantage and add to the general atractiveness,' the' entries being extremely good. Judg^J; ing in these competitions is proceed- -._ ing. A portion or the floor space has been reserved for the Maypole dance,j>. which formed a feature of this afternoon's atractions. A balloon, ascent -by, | Captain Lorraine from the. sports track, performing dogs, and a Punch' and Judy show were also arranged for. This evening there will be cycle races on the sports track under the. management of the Auckland Cycling Club, the programme of which con- - tains some interesting features, hotably a musical ride, with coloured lanterns. A charge of one shilling will admit to tableaux, concert, and bicycle track, the grandstand being sixpence extra. Children under 12 will be admitted at half-price. —.--.— AkziQjk
