j False Pretences.—An elderly man 1 named James Grigg Cummings pleaded guilty to charges of having, by false pretences, obtained from J. It. Hooper £2 16/ in mone\r; to having, by false pretences, obtained from Ernest Jones, one watch; and also to having attempted to obtain from John Griffiths £1 in money. His Honor said this was not a case for probation. He sentenced the accused to two years' imprisonment with hard labour. —W Tilliam Oliver pleaded guilty to forging a cheque, and with using the same at Newmarket as if it were genuine. After evidence was given His Honor sentenced the Accused to twelve months' imprisonment with hard labour.
Breaking and Entering. — John Shannon was charged with having, on January 27th, at Auckland, broken and entered the shop of Wm. Richmond, in Wellesley street West, and with having- stolen therefrom one pair of boots. The accused pleaded guilty. Detective Grace snid he caught the man red-handed. The accused had been a 'bus driver previously. There was nothing previously against the accused. The Probation Officer said ho could not recommend probation. The accused was addicted to drink and opium smoking, and was untrustworthy. His Honor imposed a sentence of three monuis' imprisonment with hard labour. '
