FORTY PERSONS KILLED AND

MANY WOUNDED

PARIS, March 6,

The Lagouban naval magazine, near Toulon, was blown up by an explosicn at two o'clock on Sunday morning.

Forty residents in the neighbourhood were killed, and at least 110 pounded.

Many were thrown out of their beds by the force of the concussion, and rushed in their night attire into the streets in terrible panic, believing an earthquake had occured.

Numbers of people were buried in

the ruins.. A vehicle was blown into the sea 300 yards distant and the occupants drowned. The explosion is attributed to chemical decomposition, a box of smokeless powvlec igaUing and exploding 200 tons of powder. Two" other magazines, though close, by, escaped, ileuses for miles around had all their windows smashed and chimneys demolished. The injured were frightfully muti-

lated. The corporal in charge of the magazine was literally scalped. Huge stones were hurled great distances.

The explosion was felt at Nice. The rescue work is proceeding. Four sentries were wounded in the explosion.
