THE TAUPO VOLCANOES.
A SPLENDID ERUPTION. -I >S
(By Telegraph— Own Correspondent.)
TAUPO, this day.
Ngauruhoe gave a splendid eruptiva display on Saturday at sunset. A. large quantity of smoke and eruptive matter was thrown out to the eastward at rig-ht angles to the slope of the mountain. There is diversity of opinions as to the exact seat of ths eruption, some aver it came from tho summit and then dropped to an approximate level of Te Mare. Others affirm that both. Xgauruhoe and Te Mare were responsible for the hug© cloud,' while others again are convinced it is a new volcanic vent from the southern slope of Xgauruhoe on a level with Te Mare, which is in the: northern front. The eruption was enhanced by. the sunset; which gave a good deal of colour to the edges of the dark cloud, which, after ascending a few thousand feet, lowered and swept aerosV the Kaimanawa Eanges.
