KING'S COLLEGE.

The annual prize distribution at King-'s College took place last evening when the school closed for the Christinas vacation. There was a large gathering- of parents and friends of the pupils. The college and grounds

r were decorated with strings of Chinese a lanterns and fairy lamps, the effect ; being- beautiful. The school prizes 1 were presented in the gymnasium by t ,the Rev. W. Beatty, the building being i ' crowded to the doors. '■ ■ The report of the principal, Mr 1 Graham Bruce, showed that the school " 'number for the term was 140. Of these , 55 were boarders, a considerable in- & crease on last years number. Mr " Bruce thought this large increase, unl" aided by endowment or Government " help, was largely due to the strong _ support of the committee, and the ins delatigable work of Mr C. Major. In the public examinations Of last year two King's College boys were ■ successful fit the matriculation ex- " amination, and nine boys passed the "junior Civil Service examination, all "of whom gained creditable positions \'• on the list of successful candidates. ; This year boys were entered for the Civil Service examinations, for the '. matriculation, and also for the senior . district scholarship examination under | the Board of Education, and a successful result was anticipated. Mr Bruce [ was somewhat disappointed that more . candidates were not sent in for the *, matriculation examination, and thought this due very largely to the ', tendency of parents to take their boys [ :«iway from shool at too early an age. An examination has just been held by Dr. McArthur of those who elected to ! compete for the scholarships for boys under 15 years of age. The scholarships for boarders, which is of the lvalue of £30 per annum, and is tenable for one year, has been won- by ! Oliver Farrer. and an exhibition of the j value of £ 10 has been awarded to Nor- ] man Ingle, who came second. The i day-boys' scholarship of the value of j m\:i is awarded to Randolph Abbott, j the second boy (Kenneth Clark) recei-j ving an exhibition of £5. Two boys j are now sitting as candidates in the ( senior district scholarship examinations, given by the Auckland Board of ■ Education. If successful they would j be offered scholarships in the College j to the value of fifty guineas per an-j num. tenable for three years. In the, lower school, examined by the prinjeipnl and Mr Major, the years work! j was satisfactorily done. The cadet j ; corps had maintained its reputation! ; for efficiency. i Dr. McArthur, the examiner! read his report, which was of a very favour- j i able character. I Before distributing the pri/.ps. the i Rev. Beany, in a thoughtful address, j urged upon parents the advisability j of giving the children a good all-round education. The prizes were presented as fol- I lows: — I Form VI. 8.--English, V. Bagnall; \ mathematics: and science, E. Cox; Latin and French, E. Cox; Special, Ghas. Boult. j Form V. A. —Mathematics, S.
