THE AUCKLAND CYCLING CLUB'S MOONLIGHT RUN.
Taking advantage of a perfect evening about 70 cyclists, including several ladies, assembled at the corner of Pitt-street and Karangahape Road on Tuesday evening last preparatory to starting on their moonlight excursion to Otahuhu, Captain Young was in charge, mounted on a. tandem, ably assisted by the sub-captains of the Club. At 7.45 the riders got under way, in procession, three deep, with Mr A. B. White, the Club's bugler, in the lead. The sight, as the riders passed along in a perfect blaze of light (for at this stage the lamps did duty for the moon), was exceedingly fine, and the crowds that lined the thoroughfare cheered loudly as the riders passed by. 'Go steady' was the order, and Otahuhu was reached in 65 minutes. During the ride out the clarion notes of the bugler, who by the way is a past master in the mystic art, kept things lively, and many a little group came out of doors to stand in wonder at beholding so many shining lights pass, a lusty cheer greeting the riders now and again as the}' passed through some populated district. Mine Host Syms of the Star Hotel had been warned of a probable invasion and was prepared with a capital supper, which was done full justice to. Both
he and his energetic staff had a busy half-hour of it.
At 9.-1.") the bugler sounded 'fall in,' ami a start was made for home. At the top of Farmer's Hill the leaders halted to allow the stragglers and those that found the climb up a bit stiff to rest. Opposite the Harp of I.rin the work of the larrikin was much in evidence in the shape of several boulders and broken bottles carefully laid across the road. This ingenious, but dangerous device, was however, frustrated by the advance guard, who fortunately saw the dan-
gi*r and had it removed out of the way before (he main body came up. The rim was a most enjoyable one, and those in charge deserve great credit for the management, which left nothing to be desired. Many riders will wait anxiously for the next moon, it having got about that the Club intend having another run next month, when arrangements will be made for pitching a marquee and dispensing evening tea, etc., to all taking part.
