THE TE KOA FIRE
NEW ZEALAND CARGO AUC-
TIONED.
LAUNCESTON, November IS
The s.s. Tekoa has arrived here from London. The captain reports that on October 7, when 125 miles off Cape^ town, fire broke out in the two after holds. The Tekoa put into Capetown. Two holds were filled with water, and the fire was extinguished. The whol? of the cargo, consisting of 18,000 tons for New Zealand, was discharged, and was sold by auction. The value of ths goods destroyed is unknown. The origin of the fire is a mystery. It is thought that when workmen were placing new rolling chocks on the vessel's side i*ed hot rivets were used, and that one may have fallen into the charcoal inauiators, igniting them, and that gradual smouldering followed. The damage to the vessel is the destruction of the insulators of the refrigerating chambers. ♦ The Tekoa will only be able to take half the usual cargo of meat from New Zealand. After ten days at the Cape the voyage was resumed.
The whole of the machinery for Tasmanian mines is intact. When this is discharged she will leave for New Zealand, probably on Wednesday.
