■A" rA 'bus stable at Avondale OAvned by .Messrs Patterson and Co. Avas destroyed by fire on October 21st. ;,The outbreak Avas discovered about five a.m. by Edgar Wm. Ward, a settler living about four hundred yards "from the stables. He at once ran to the Kcene and roused the inmates, three bus drivers named Charles Lake, Alfred [Ward and James Benton, who slept on -the premises. They had -just suffi--cient time to remove the buses and .horses (numbering about 50) and liarmess from the building. Everything ■else in the stables was completely destroyed, and the building burned to the ground. Hoav the fire arose is not Imown. John Forsyth, a bus drive_iin ■ the employ of Messrs Patterson, passed the stables between 3 and 4 a.m., and saw no sign of fire then. .The stables Avere insured for £400 in the NeAv Zealand office, and were valued at £600.. Forage and effects to .he value of £100 Avere lost in the fire.
\ DUNEDIN, October 20. A fire broke out at two o'clock this Tnorning on tlie premises of Reid and Gray. From the statement of Payne, night watchman, the lire must have ■started in tlie pattern department. Payne was at work in the Blacksmith's department, near the CraAvford-street end of the premises, Avhen he observed lire. He immediately gave the alarm. A fierce south-easterly gale Avas bloAving, ;&nd in a comparatively short time the fire 3iad spread from the pattern shop through into Princess-street, completely -demolishing the carpenter's shop, with its elaborate tools, also all the finished goods 4n the store rooms of the three-storey .building facing Princess-street. The flames Avere so fierce that it was all "the brigade could do to keep them from spreading to Shacklock's foundry and offices adjoining. The entire establishment is valued at £80,000 and one-fourth is destroyed. Mr Gray, junior, estimates the firm's loss at fully £20,000, The fire broke out in the middle pf the block of buildings, completely destroying the portion from the centre to Princesstreet.
Little or no damage Avas done at the lfct_ CraAyford-street end. On the second and X third floors of the building were stored a HU number of bicycles, and a quantify of finH|j ished goods. J
