A SAD CASE.
A FATHER CHARGED WITH ASSAULTING HIS DAUGHTERS.
On Oct. 20fch, Frederick George Cotterell appeared before the Police Court to answer the charge of having unlawfully Avounded Beatrice Cotterell and Florrie Cotterell, his daughters, by striking them on the head Avith a stone hammer.
Sergeant Clarke said that the girls were not yet in a fit condition to make any statement as to the alleged assault. He therefore asked that the case might be adjourned for a Aveek. Dr. Walker, who Avas'attending the girls, would not allow the police at present to ask them any questions, as their condition Avas still serious. The Sergeant added that he would object to bail being granted. The accused nodded his head to signify that he agreed to the remand, hut said nothing. ?
The injured girls are progressing as favourably as can be expected, considering the nature of their injuries. The eldest, Beatrice, received a blow on either temple and seven stitches had to be put in. One of her eyes also was swollen and closed up. The other girl was st.uck on the top of the head, receiving two contused wounds, and a third wound between the eyebrows.
