POWDER EXPLOSION.
ROOF BLOWN OFF A BUILDING
CHRISTCHURCH, October 21
A serious explosion occurred in the city this afternoon at Stokes' FireAvorks Factory. William Stokes was Avorking in a building about 31ft by 14ft, mixing explosives for rockets, AA'hen he exploded, some potash ancl sulphur. He Avas near the door, and had just time to escape Avhen a second explosion occurred through the fira reaching a quantity of prepared mixture. This in turn set light to a keg of poAvder, and aterrific explosion folloAved, the Avhole roof being blown off the building, Avhich Avas soon in flames. Stokes had an extremely narroAV escape. The stock of finished fireAvorks AA*as stored in tanks in a detached building near by, but escaped.
