AUCKLAND COLLEGE AND GRAMMAR SCHOOL.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Board of Governors of the Auckland College and Grammar School was held yesterday afternoon. Canon Nelson presided, and there were also present;— Dr. Roberton, Messrs P. Dignan, K. Udy, W. J." Speight.
The Chairman, before opening the business of the meeting, said that it would ill become them as a Board, after hearing of the death of Sir George Grey, practically the founder of the Grammar School, if they did not mark the occasion by a resolution. He moved, "The Board of Governors of the Auckland College and Grammar School, at their first meeting after the death of Sir George Grey, X.C.8., desire to place on record their deep sense of the gratitude which is due to tjie late statesman for the many benefits which have accrued and will accrue to higher education in Auckland by his prescient action and labours in that behalf, The A.C. and G.S. recognises the late Sir George Grey as practically the founder of that institution. And also the Board cannot fail to remember that while in later years Sir George was resident in Auckland the same interest which prompted its inauguration was evinced by him by many an act done for the good of the school. The Board mourn the loss of the founder of the educational establishment which has by his initial exertions been committed to their care."— The motion was seconded by Mr Speight, and was carried, the members standing. — It was decided to forward a copy of the resolution to Mr S. T. George. Williamson Scholarships.—lt was decided to offer three junior John Williamson scholarships for competition, commencing February next, tenable for three years. Playground. — The Playground Committee reported that in accordance with a resolution passed at last meeting of the Board, details of the proposed playground between Wyndham and Stanley streets have been obtained from !VJr J. Boylan, the estimated cost being £1,500. —The Committee recommended the Board to raise a loan for the purpose of carrying out the work.- The report was adopted, and it was decided to consult the Board's legal advisers as to whether there were any obstacles in the way.
