WELCOME FIND.

In the new cross-cut just started from No.3level a,most promising-look-ing leader, 6 inches in width, is showing in the face. A little gold has been seen in pieces of stone broken this week from the stopes above No. 3 level, where the leader averages six inches in width. NONPAREIL. > In the leading stope .the leader continues to show gold, and a couple of pounds of picked stone were selected, The leader is rather small and consequently not much crushing dirt is being won. When breaking down on Friday a few nice dabs of gold were seen in^the stone. ; AOTEA. A pigeongram was received to-day stating-: 'Commenced to drive eastward on the lode. Colours of gold showing freely through the stone. WENTWORTH. At the mine everything is progressing satisfactorily, 47 men being employed in the various works of development and preparations for the erection of the battery. The benching of the water-race has been completed and the road to the mine formed for a distance of 50 chains, whilst the excavations on the battery site are well in hand. In the mine the drive on the Studholme reef, which has now passed into the Rapid mine, also held under option by the same Company, proves the reef to be keeping well up in value. The last breaking down assayed by the mine manager returned a value of £31 18/1 per ton. This reef varies in width from one to three feet, and is composed of stone from which it is impossible to pick the goldcarrying portions as all past tests have gone to show that the gold is evenly distributed throughout the entire width and is a striking example of the fact that no approximate estimate can be made from the appearance, of the quartz, as by the ordinary miner it would be deemed unpromising stone, and .on panning in the dish does not give a prospect equal to one-twentieth of the assay value. No gold-has at any time been visible in the quartz.
