CAULFIELD AND MELBOURNE
CUPS
During, the settling over the A.J.C. Spring Meeting the principal events of the Victorian spring campaign came in for a considerable share of attention in straightout and double wagering. For the V.RC. Derby a wager of 500 to 400 was accepted about Bobadil; while Cocos, Gauleon, and Woodlark were also supported in small amounts for the classic race. In double wagering on the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups the combinations backed were—Reka with Clarion, The Grafter, Merloolas, and Amberite; Prince Carbine with Clarion, The Chief, and The Grafter ; Robin Hood with The Grafter, Amberite, and Cordite ; Hymettus with Reka, The Grafter, George Frederick, Amberite, Merloolas, and Manfred ; Ine Chief with The Grafter, Amberite, Manfred, Majestic, and Clarion ; Wayfarer with Reka, Clarion, Manfred, Merloolas, Amlaerite, and War God; Dreamland with April Fool, Clarion, and Reka ; Renown with Clarion, The Grafter and Cardamon ; and Trent with Spencer and Clarion, at prices, ranging from 1,000 to 5 to 1,000 to 2. In straight-out bettiHg on the Caulfield Cup 1,000 to 80 was offered on the field, with Wayfarer favourite, 1,000 to 60 y. Reka, and 1,000 to 50 bar two; while 1,000 to SO was on offer on the field for the Melbourne Cup, Merloolas and Clarion disputing favouritism. The racehorse Telephone 'has been sold through the agency of Messrs Hunter and Nolan to H. Franks, private trainer to the Hon. H. Mosman. ' Mr J. Beckett, ex-owner of Levanter, returned from Sydney this morning in thes.s. Waihora, also J. Katterns, who rode Levanter in his two races at Randwick. Mr J,. C Booth is fixed to leave on Wednesday next. The gelding Rex will return with him in the event of not being sold. Levanter is to be shipped to England in the s.s. Ninevah on the 14th October, along with the stallion Abercorn and other purchases of Captain Scott. A Press Association cablegram from Sydney states that the thoroughbreds purchased by Mr J. B. Reid at the Hobartville and Kirkham Stud sales have been shipped by the s.s. Monowai en route to Lyttelton. , , Nominations for Avondale hack races close to-night with Mr K. Bollard, hon. secretary.
