STREET BETTING.
DRASTIC LEGISLATION,

WELLINGTON, this day.
So drastic are the provisions of the Gaming and Lotteries Act Amendment Bill which the Government are introducing in the Legislative Council, that if the measure becomes law, the days of street wagering and tote shops will quicklybe numbered, as persons found assembling in the street for purposes of makin" wagers are liable to be fined £10 each, ana the police are empowered to arrest them without warrant, and detain such suspects till they are brought before the Court Extended powers are given with respect to seisures from suspected gaming houses, by which all books circulars, letters and documents may be impounded, and provision is made for idemnifying witnesses required to give evidence, the present law in relation thereto being repealed.
