CHINA MAIL NEWS.

ATTACK ON A LADY MISSIONARY.

The steamer Menmuir, which arrived at Brisbane on the Ist inst., brings Eastern files showing that the British steamer Chittagong arrived at Hong Kong on otii July from Aparri, in the north of the island of Luzon, in the Philippines, with 47 Chinese refugees. Ten hours after leaving port the steamer was overhauled by the American cruisers Baltimore and Charleston, the war ships turning their search lights on and firing a gun. The Chittagong hove to, and was boarded and her papers examined, after which she was allowed to proceed. The Admiralty have given instructions for the battle ship Barflenr to replace the cruiser Grafton as flagship, with RearAdmiral Fitzgerald as second in command, on the China station. Captain Fisher, late of the Orlando, will commission the cruiser Blenheim, when that vessel takes out a new crew to the Barfleur; and will afterwards command the Grafton. ,

Miss Gardiner, a lady missionary, while out walking near Kien Ning, was suddenly seized by the wrist by a man who attempted to strike her with a chopper, but she was able to wrench herself free, and before her assailant could renew the attack, a Bible woman who attended the missionary bravely interposed, and bore the brunt of the attack, being severelywounded in the arm.
