ColHhs delivered his lecture, on "How the Poor Live.7 There was a good attendance, *a.itd the lecture, which chiefly dealt with the lives of th&i poor in London, was attentively listened to. A number of limelight views of the homes of the poor in grea,t cities were exhibited. ; ' At the concert to be given by the Devonport Musical Society on Tuesday next, we notice among other interesting items, that Leslie's charming trio, " Memory," is to be rendered by Madame. Chambers,1 Mrs J. M. Geddis and Miss Tpwsey, and in the hands of such capable artists should prove one of the most attractive items of the concert. ■■■-. .«. A meeting was held yesterday afternoon in the Chamber of Mines for the purpose of exhibiting Mr _\ Hull's patent attachment rudder. ;;Mr Hull showed,models which were carefully examined by seafaring meu, all of whom spoke highly in favour of the patent. * Mr Hull explained it was intended to form a syndicate for the purpose of completing the patent rights everywhere, thought profitable. Th% capital of the first syndicate was fixed at £2,000, in 200 shares of £10 each. Forty of these shares were offered to the public, the whole of the proceeds, £400 (less actual cash, already paid), .being placed to the credit of the syndicate. ~_ About 20 shares were taken up imthe room. The annual concert of the Newmarket Bowling Club was given in the Newmarket Hall last evening and passed off most feuc cessfully, the hall beiti^ comfortably filled. The concert opened with a violin solo by Miss Ethel Mackie, which was rendered in a most pleasing manner. Vocal solos were rendered most acceptably by. Mioses Maxwell and Mclntyre, Messrs Higgott, H and A.. Kent, Black, W. S. Prime, Menzies, and Rev. A. Mitchell: Duets by Miss Moncur and Mr Menzies, Mr and Mrs Prime, Messrs A. and H. Kent, and Hey. Mitchell and A. Kent. A pianoforte Solo was giVen by Miss Daniels, and a recitation by.Mrs Andprson, which had to be repeated. -The place;..of accompanist was ably filled by Mrs C. G. Laurie. On Thursday eveningl a well-attended entertainment ; was given-in Sowerby's Hall, Lower Symonds - streets ,in: aid of the water motor fund 'for St. Paul's Anglican Church" SongSj instrumental selections, etc., were contributed by Misses Stevenson, Mclntyre, Alexander, KobihSon,. Edmiston, Messrs.F. E. Baume, Worrall, Bre\vn, and Gibson. Three tableaux, "The Incantation," 'VThe Minuet^' and "Britannia," were given with excellent effect, and afancy dance by Mrs Sowerby's pupils was much , admired. The farce "My Turn Next" concluded the entertainment, the various characters being impersonated by Misses Dawson (two), Ansley, Messrs E.^ Withers, E. Fletcher, W. A. Cumming, and M. Nelson. N The Ponsonby Hall ivas crowded to the doors on Thursday evening, when a concert was given in aid of. St. Stephen's Presbyterian Sun-day-school. An excellent entertainment was provided by iMr Chas. Cooper, scenic artist to the E«.i««n Kinematograph Company, with the aid of his kinemato-; graph, phonograph, arid myriorama. The " living pictures" proved a source of wonder and delight to all, and were very heartily applauded. The most popular pictures-appeared to be "Snowballing," " Faust up to Date," "The Sea-cave," and "The Baths of Diana," and the lime-light views of ■• the American navy and the late » Mr Gladstone were also greatly appreciated. Miss E. Matheson presided at the piano. *
