LONDON GOSSIP.

(From Our Special Correspondent.)

LONDON, May 11

A RECORD SNUFF BOX,

Messrs Duveen ancl Co., the famous Bond-street dealers in things antique and precious, have just broken the record by paying £3500 for a snuff box. The box is a small oval affair made of gold, and. is exquisitely painted in subjects after the Lancrets in the National Gallery, representing the four ages of childhood. It dates from the period of Louis NY., and is a beautiful thing in its way, but personally I should prefer £3500. The box was purchased at the Hecksher sale, and previous to Messrs Duveen's final bid the highest price paid for a snuff box Avas £3000, given by one of the Rothschilds at a sale of curios in Paris. The record box is, from a collector's point of vieAv, the finest known, and Messrs Duveen seem quite content Avith their bargain. It seems that anything very special in snuff boxes soon finds a buyer, no matter what the price. The chances are that the late Mr Hecksher's specimen Avill find its Avay into the magnificent collection owned by the Czar of Russia, or that of the Grand Duke Alexis.
