PER AORANGI FROM VANCOUVER., THE CALLAO'S COLANDER NOT SHOT. LATEST MESSAGE FROM DEWEY. A GERMAN SENSATION EXPLODED. CERVERA'S FLEET IN A BAD WAY. WELLINGTON, this clay. The Aorangi, which arrived to-day, brought Honolulu newspaper files up to the 9th inst. A despatch from Hongkong' dated May :27th, states that the report that the commander of the Spanish gun boat Callao was tried by court martial and shot for not firing on ihe American sRSps which captured the Callao, is untrue. A message to tlie New York 'Tribune' on May 27th says: 'Official advices received from Admiral Dewey, while confirming the belief that his supreme control of Manila harbour is as firm as ever, indicate that the necessity for strengthening him with a powerful military force is daily increasing, and is not safe to be delayed.' A Berlin message of May 25th says it is semi-official ly denied that thereis any truth in the story received from Manila regarding the German Consul threatening Admiral Dewey for not permitting the landing- of provisions from German ships, it being claimed that the Consul said he would land them with the aid of German cruisers, and that the American commander in return threatened to fire upon, the German warships if they interfered. When Cervera's Spanish squadron called at Curacoa the ships had little or no coal and scant supplies of provisions. The allowance to the men of ships' crews for five days had been nothing but beans. The torpedo boats were almost empty, and in such condition that they would be unable to do much damage to the enemy.
