THE HAWKE'S BAY MEETING.

The first day's racing oi the Hawke's jay Club Winter Meeting on Wednesday saw Dante once more in form, and the gelding had no difficulty iv annexing the big hurdle race on the programme. All last season Dante was off the turf, he being spellJj_ pn account of a habit he had of bleeding at the nose, and judging- by hislatest easy victory he has come out like a giant refreshed. On Easter ■'(Tuesday he won a hurdle race at Feiltl-jn-MVitli list 41b in tlie saddle, and at {he recent Wanganui meeting he -split the stable companions, Torpina and Misfire, in the second hurdle race. Considering that the season before last Dante won a hurdle race in good company with an impost of l.'.st 21b, it must be admitted that Mr Henry was Mnd in letting him oft' in the Hawke's Bay Hurdles with/lOst Sib. Ilangipiuiehu. the winner of the Maiden Steeplechase, has been a winner over hurdles this season at the Hntt, Mauawatn. and Rangitikei. He is described to me as a very tine, cut of a horse, but he has had a knee trouble which has frequently prevented him bein_r seen at his best. Tauhei. who got home first in the Welter Handicap, will be remembered by local racegoers, for when brought up here from Gisborne she showed a lot of pace in her nces at Ellerslie. She is by Castor— Vivandiere. A strong feature at. the winter gathering of our Napier friends is the Ladies' Bracelet. The event was established in 1S8?>, and it appears as popular as ever. Wednesday's contest makes the first time that Miss Ada Ormond's nomination has carried off the much-coveted prize; but Miss Ormond won the race one year. Hussar, the latest winner, is a.four-year-old gelding by Cuirassier—Lullaby, and was bred by the Hon. J. P. Ormond. He has been a great favourite for the race for some time past.
