SHOOTING AND FOOTBALL

PAEROA, Saturday. An interesting shooting competition took place this afternoon at the Paeroa Rifle range between the Ohinemuri No. 1 Volunteers and the Hauraki Rifles from Thames ten men aside, 7 shots each at 200vds' 300 yds, and 500 yds. The match resulted in a rather tJasy victory for the local team by 11)2 points. The following are the sQores:—

The first football match of the season took place this afternoon at Te Aroha, between a scratch team from Paeroa, stylin»themselves the Taniwha, and a Te Aroha team. The match resulted in a win for the local men by S points (a goal and a try) to nil.

Football in Waihi promises this season lo be very interesting. The Waihi Union has held its meeting It decided to affiliate direct with tlie Auckland Union, which is a step in the right direction. Three senior and three junior teany? will compete, namely : City, West and suburbans, and already practices are going on every Saturday. The Cup matches commence on May 12th. C. Cornthwaite, T. Clarkin, Laurie (of Northern Wairoa), and other good men aro playing, and altogether I anticipate Waihi will possess a strong team, especially amongst the forwards.
