PROPOSED SOUTHERN OBSERVATORY.

WELLINGTON, this day. The Shipmasters Association received a letter from the Australasian Association of Science urging the need of establishing an observatory in the South Island, where magnetic observations could be taken to check variations of compass. The mattes is considered one of great importance, and it is understood the Premier is disposed to support the project if it is property taken up by those interested. '
