CHARITABLE AID IN AUCKLAND.

WHO ARE THE RECIPIENTS OF

RELIEF?

As considerable interest is felt in the cost of charitable aid, an abstract from the printed list will show in a general way the disposition of the funds for lire purpose. The following- is an analysis of the list of those at present receiving" rations, rent and other allowances .from the Auckland Charitable. Aid Board, within the city and suburbs, including- DevorTport and Onehunga, with the districts adjacent, exclusive of those in the Costley Home, and children boarded out or in institutions: —Women, 157; men, 50; children, 350. Of the women 05 are widows, seventeen are deserted wives, two have husbands in the lunatic asylum, three have husbands in gaol, and there are' (Sight single women. Of the 50 men 10 are widowers, and eight are single men, or a total of ;18 men living' alone, to 125 lone women. There are 33 married couples, where husband and wife sire livingtogether. The women and children of tender years thus number 507, as against 50 male adults, ii 2of whom are married and 18. living alone. From this it will be seen that there are three limes as many, women, as men, seven times as many" lone women as there are men living alone, ten times as many women and children as there are adult males, and twenty-eight times as many women and children as there are adult males living alone. Of the 05 widows 4(5 have no children, five have one child each, six have two each, nine have three, fourteen have four, seven have five, four have six, oighf. Of the deserted wives, ont> has one child, five have two each, two have tliree, three have four, four have five, ami two have six each. Of wives whose, husbands are in gaol or the, lunatic asylum, one. has one. child, 1 wo have two e'nch, one has throe, and one has four childcVn. Of the single women, one has one child, one has three children, and one has four. The 33 married couples have 5(5 children all told. Of the 10 widowers seven have no children, one has one chiTtl, and two have three children each.
