THE ASSOCIATION CHAMPION

SHIPS.

WON BY UNITED I, NORTH SHORE

11, AND PONSONBY A.

The 1897-98 cricket season was brought tp a close on' Saturday afternoon, when the decisive match between Parnell and United was concluded in favour of the latter by three wickets. United thus again wins the Championship. This team required to make 97 runs in their second innings to win the match, and of these 38 had been made for two Wickets on 'the previous Saturday. The two not-outs, Stemson and Brown, took the wickets, and Brown was immediately caught. Marshall followed, and was finely caught by Cromwell behind the sticks, without adding to the score. C. May then joined Stemson, and after 10 runs had been added was bowled by Lawson. Labatt followed, but after making two or three in a fluky manner, he was caught Walton came next, and in his first over sent a luard drive back to Lawson, who failed to hold it. He then made a forward drive right out of the ground, and was shortly after eleali bowled by Restieaux, who was trundling in splendid form. Lusk then partnered Stemson. Both men played sound, free cricket, but therunning between the wickets was most erratic, and twice Stemson very nearly threw his wicket away. These two players carried the score to the required total, and United secured the verdict by three wickets. The following are the scores :—
