PONSONBY.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —For coolness commend me to the letter of your .correspondent 'Push.' Owners "who have property and who acquired it no doubt years since at a very low price in a blind, narrow street have, it appears, trespassed on private property for their own convenience for many years. The time comes when they cau no longer do so. They at once make a demand to the local authority (whose revenues are known to be deficient for ordinary requirements of the city) to do what, —to levy a Special Ward' Rate in the district to be benefited, or to. pay part of the costs themselves? Not at all; they want the local authorities to find the money. If they cannot, then to take the property under the .Public Works Act, a venture having regard to the interest involved requiring serious consideration. Ponsonby has been fortunate in being joined to the City, sharing their loans and endowments which at no distant date must be 01 great value, but they must moderate their demands. As it is, their re 4u *rej ments are numerous, and it would think be found that the rates derived therefrom do not recoup the expend1 * ture therein. No doubt the remark of your correspondent will make tn« Ward members shake in their shoes, certainly the language used by mm towards gentlemen who devote the r time and services to the best of their ability is hardly quite respectiul or proper.—-Yours,. ,_,i r 1 l AD FINEJI.
