THE PRICE OF WHEAT.
The price of wheat' in Auckland is a favourite subject of discussion jusb now. At the close of the meeting of the Agricultural Association yesterday afternoon. Mr R. 0. Young and Mr T. H. Hall were invited to the meeting to give the farmers tlie'benefit of their information regarding the various wheat markets. Mr Robert Hall moved "That the meeting expresses its opinion that the prices at the opening of this season's market were unsatisfactory to wheat-growers." Mr Young stated that he had commissions from Southern firms to buy wheat in Auckland ab 4s ljd per bushel. . The result was that Auckland millers were now giving rather more than that, so that he was out of the market, as lie had to pay from Ud to 4d in freight. If tbe Auckland millers had to draw their supplies from the South, the cost, including freight, would be 4s 7d or 4s Bd. He thought farmers in the Auckland district should not take less than 4s 6d. He could say that he never saw better wheat than the samples . sent from the Waikato this year. In other years he had seen the best wheat come from the South. Mr T. H. Hall mentioned that a few years ago his linn handled some iiour made entirely of Auckland wheat. The Hour was sold to two of the b .st bakers in Auckland, and these men, who knew the quality of' flour, voluntarily gave 25s a ton more for it 'than for the best brands of Southern Hour. He could hardly imagine that that was a special case. The motion proposed by Mr Hall was then put and carried.
