NAUTICAL ENQUIRY.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

WELLINGTON", this day,

A magisterial enquiry into the striking of the ship Nelson, began this morning. Captain Perriam said lie struck on some place between Sinclair Head and Karori rock, where no dangers were shown on the chart. He knew the coast well. There was a small steamer about a quarter of aniile outside the ship. Mr Bell, who appeared for the Collector of Customs, suggested that the spot where the vessel grounded was really in shoal water off Snclair Head, but the captain denied-this, and asserted that he was about a mile and a-half oil'the head. Mr li. L. Davis, chief officer, said lie was on the forecastle when he heard the ship grating over the bottom. He saw no rocks about. It was a mile off shore.
