DEVONPORT CONVENT SCHOOLS BAZAAR.

The bazaar organised in aid of the new convent schools at Devonport was opened last evening in the Devonport Hall by Mr W. J. Napier, the Secretary of the Bazaar Committee. In his opening remarks Mr Napier apologised for the absence of the Mayor (Mr J. H. Macky), who had been asked to preside, but was unable to attend owing to a prior engagement. Mr Napier referred to the rapid.progress made by the Convent School since it was opened some twelve months ago by the Sisters of Mercy, and stated that owing to the increased number of pupils the present building is quite inadequate for the requirements of the school. Since the movement to increase the size of the building had been set on foot about £100 had been raised, but £'150 would still have to be raised in order that the structure might be completed, and it was hoped the bazaar would go far towards raising the sum required. Thanks were due to those who so kindly donated gifts, which it was hoped would be disposed of at the bazaar. The bazaar was then declared open, and judging by the ready sale which the articles met with, the bazaar should go far towards raising the necessary funds for the enlargement of tho school. The various stalls were presided over by the following ladies : —'Flowers, ferns, and pot plants, Mrs Napier, Misses Kendrick, Gudgeon, Dr. Bourbel and Alison ; refreshments, Mrs C. Lindsay and Miss Moran ; sweet and fancy stall, Misses Kenealy, Gudgeon, and Do Bourbel; fancy needlework, Miss A. Baker ; lace and fancywork, Mrs A. Martin; fancy goods and photographs, Misses Lennard, Gough, Donovan, and Smith : Japanese ware, Mesdames Boylan and Niccol ; Christmas tree, Misses Jarman and Parker; Mr A. Cutler superintended the working of the phonographs. A number of other attractions were also exhibited. During the evening a programme of songs, tableaux, etc., was gone through, under the supervision of Mrs KehoeDempsey. The bazaar was open again this'afternoon and will be continued this evening and to-morrow afternoon and evening. An operatic concert will be given to-morrow night.
