OHINEMURI COUNTY COUNCIL.

PAEROA, Thursday.

The monthly meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council was held to-day. Present: Crs. liarry (Chairman), Mitchell, Cock, McGruer, Moore, McAndrew, Nash, Bowler and Corbett. The meeting was more than usually important. The following tenders were dealt with :— Erecting foot bridge over Ohinemuri River at Karangahake s Coulson and Newlson (accepted), £188 Is ; K. H. Graham, £199 8s 9d,; J. Fitzpatrick,' £212 10s. Repairs to Waihi-Katikati Road :M. J. Keane, £54 8s ; J. McGinley, £83 6s ; Rae Bros., £44 15s : Kerry and party (accepted), £40 ; Stanley and Robinson, £53 2s ; T. Gregory, £46.

The Council rescinded a previous resolution giving power to all and sundry who wished to introduce gas into Paeroa to lay mains, etc., in the streets. This was done in accordance with notice of motion by the chairman. Two applications were then dealt with from Mr G. Elliott and Mr Atkinson, the former forwarding a cheque for £50, and the latter £100, as a guarantee of good faith, both asking for the sole rights of supplying gas for two years. After discussiou Mr Atkinson's offer was unanimously accepted, he being the iirst applicant.

it was decided to leave the route of the road to the Alpha mine to be decided upon by the county chairman and engineer in conjunction with Mr Collins, mine manager. It was decided to expend £200 in forming and metalling the Mill Road, Paeroa. It was decided to cancel the contract of Moore and Graham, for erection of a traffic bridge at Karangahake, the deposit to be forfeited, and the engineer to employ men on wages to complete the foundation. The Chairman stated that the Finance Committee had that morning noticed that the Council had spent during the past month a total sum of £700 in day labour alone, of which £257 was for carting. The Council were unanimous that this should stop, and a resolution was carried that in future all carting where possible should be performed by contract. A petition was presented by Cr. Barry from residents of the business portion of Waihi asking that the Council should take steps to obtain from the Government a sufficient loan ior providing a water supply for Waihi township, and agreeing to have their property rated sufficiently to pay interest and sinking fund on the loan. The Council decided to forward a copy of the correspondence received to the Government, in order to obtain from them an expression of opinion whether they would consider a rate levied on land held under goldfields title sufficient guarantee for the loan.
