ST. PAUL'S SUNDAY SCHOOL.

REMOVAL AGAIN REFUSED

At the meeting of the City Council last might a largely signed petition was read from residents of St. Paul's parish requestin-' the Council to re-consider, then* decision as°to the removal of.St. Pauls Sundayschool building and withdraw the opposition to it being placed m Abercrombiestreet. Various reasons were urged in support, among them being that three residences are being built of wood in Symondstreet by the Council's permission and that the building which they wish to remove would be a great improvement to Ahercrombie-street. Mesdames Judd, Howard, Page and Miss Priaulx appeared in support on behalf of St. Paul's parish. Cr. Kidd moved "That the petition be received and referred to the Streets Committee, and that the Committee visit the ground." Cr. Patterson seconded. Cr Jamieson moved as an amendment •'That the Council adhere to their previous resolution." _ .... Cr. Stichbury seconded. He said it was wrong for the ladies to come and intimidate the Council. He said the reverend gentlemen whom they heard at the last Council meeting did not soften the hearts of the Council and he hoped the ladies would not do so. Cr. Courtney thought they could not repudiate the work they had done. The Mayor ruled that the amendment of Cr. Jamieson could not be made, without the unanimous vote of the Council. . It was then agreed that the ladies be Mrs Judd spoke in support of the petition. She pointed out that the Council had gone back on their rule by granting permission to others in Symonds-street to build wooden houses. If they were not nllowed to remove the school they would have to sell the timber in it for wood. She thought a little consideration should be shown to the parish. They were put m a helpless position unless the prayer of the petition was granted. Mrs Howard pointed out that the erection of .the building would improve Aher-crombie-street. She hoped the Council would grant the prayer of the petition. The motion that the petition he referred to the Streets Committee was put and lost by 9 votes to 5. Those who voted for Cr. Kidd's motion were the mover, and Crs. Patterson, Grey, Warren and AVhite. It was then agreed that the petition be received.
