TO-DAY'S NOTES

MELBOURNE, this day. It was a fine morning and good work was done at Flemington. Dreamland and Auraria galloped eleven furlongs in two minutes thirty-three and a-half seconds. Eiridsclale covered a mile and a-half nicely in 2min 48sec, but Clarion and Gaulus clipped this by three seconds, both moving well, Gaulus specially so. The Grafter apparently held his own with Wait-a-Bit at the termination of a sterling mile and three-quarters' gallop, registered in 3min 12^sec. Amberite and Fucile traversed a mile and a-half comfortably in 2min 48£ sec. Metford finished in advance of Coil over the\sanie journey in 2min 47sec. Bloodshot ran the last six furlongs of ten in lmin 23isec. He should be dangerous in the Williamstown Cup. Foliage pleased the touts immensely whilst traversing a mile and a-quarter in 2min lb'sec. Positano again stuck up in the middle of a gallop with Wait-a-Bit and The Grafter through his rider striking him with a whip. Ditto finished better than Zouroft" at the termination of a strong mile and a-half gallop. The Auckland horse Ditto is handicapped at list in the Steeplechase. Last night a backer offered to lay 7,000 to 4,000 on Aururn for the Derby, but the bookmakers would only accept 700 to 400.
Five hundred to 30 was also laid each on Ayrshire and Trent, and 2.000 to 120 on Fucile.
The double of Aurum and Delawar was supported to win £10,000. A wager of 1,000 to 50 was taken each about Clarion, Amberite, and Toreador, for the Melbourne Cup, and 1,000 to 30 each Manfred and Dreamland.
Close on 1,500 booked to Wait-a-Bit at 100 to 11, he hardening a point, whilst Aurum also advanced to 100 to 12.
