NEWMARKET BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council was held last evening, there being in attendance the Mayor (Mr Laxon), Messrs Angus, McColl, Lumpkins, Lowe, Laurie, Spooner, Whyman and Edgerly.

Kail way Crossings. —A number of ratepayers forwarded'a petition asking the Council to do their best to have the two unprotected crossings in the Borough made safe. It was resolved to communicate with the Auckland members and with Mr Lawry, pointing out the danger of the crossings, and requesting them to urge the Minister for Railways to protect the crossings.

Waterworks.—lt was resolved to connect Boyle Crescent with Park Road by a four-inch water main. It was decided to abolish the permits .for alterations and extensions of water connections. It was resolved that all work behind meters must be done by a licensed plumber. Office of Mayor.—A petition signed by all the Councillors was presented by Cr. Whyman asking Mr Laxon to again stand for the office of Mayor, the petitioners promising to do all in their .power to secure his return.—Mr Laxon considered that someone else should hold the office, but as it was the unanimous wisli of the Conncil he would again oiler himself for re-election.
