j EXPEDITION AGAINST MOHMANDS
SWATIS SURRENDER ONLY' USELESS WEAPONS. CALCUTTA, September 4. Sir William Loekhart, the general commanding the Punjab district, has been recalled from London. He will ] assume general control of 40,000 troops stationed on the frontier. The expedition against the Mohmancls will occupy a fortnight, after which the troops will advance against the Afridis and Orakzais at Tirah Pass. The Afridis are now sending contingents to assist the Orakzais against the British at the Somona ridge. The Swatis, on the right bank of Ihe river, have paid 35,000 rupees, and yielded up SOO firearms and TOO swords. The tribesmen, however, have concealed their breechloaders, and merely surrendered their useless weapons.
