A correspondenb writes ua ai follows, froca Edinburgh-street, Newton :—"Some weeks ago you. published the new clauses of the Shop Assistants Act, would you now kindly publish for the benefib of myself and some 'Z0 other of your readers, the exemptions from the giving of employees the weekly half - holiday, and whether there is a clause for fche number of working hours per week for browories and cordial facterie*."
[Under the Shops and Shop Assistants Ace thare are no exemptions for the weekly half-holiday. Breweries and cordial factories do not come under fche Shops Acb and to are nob liable to the half-holiday. All thoie shopi which employ any hands must either take tbe half-holiday on tha day fixed by the half-holiday conference to-day, or else close on Saturday afternoon. Those who do not employ any bands are at liberby to choose any day of the week they please. Mr Ferguson, Inspector under tUe Act, has eenb out circulars asking shopkeepers to notify him on which day they intend to clone, and in reply baa received numerous notices. A number of small shopkeepers who do not employ any hands have notified their intention of closing on other days of the weak than Wednesday or Saturday.]
