The Champion Chess Tourney was concluded at Christchurcb on January 7tb, when Barnes drew with Mellor, »«<- ---won the Championship. Mellor, *b° adopted the Ruy Lopez opening, soon got a cramped game, ana appeared to be in a critical position at tto 25th move. At the 27th, Barnes won a knight for a pawn, ab the 36th Mellor won a pawn, and ab the 55bh a draw was agreed upon. The total scores are :— Barnes (Wellington), won 8, lost 2. Mellor (Dunedin), won 7, lo.b 3. Cocks (Wellington), won 7, lost J, Pleasants (Rangitikei), won 6, lost •»» Anderson (Christchutch), won 5, lost S. Gifford (Bull's), won 5, lost 5. Mason (Wellington), won 5, lost 5. Edwords (Dunedin), won 4, lost 6. Hookham (Cbristchurch), won 3J, lost os. Meldrum (Rangitikei), won 3i, lost 6JGrierson 'Auckland}, won I, lost 9. Mellor and Cocks agreed to divide »■ second prize.
