The Matatna.—lco Sighted. Port Chalmers. November 30.—Arrived : Matatua, e.s.. Captain Evans, 54 days from London. On November Bth, in latibude 45deg. S. longitude 50deg. E., ice was seen, and till the 14th. in latitude 46deg. S. longitude 82dog. 8., steaming 1,500 miles, 57 largo bergs in addition to small ones were counted. Tbe largest waa 120 foeb high and ono and a-half miles in length. The weather nearly tbe whole of the time was very thick.
The barqno Clan McLeod, from Now York, via Wellington, arrived on December 8. The Clan McLeod lefb New York on July Bth, and had an uneventful but tedious passage oub bo Wellington, light south-easb winds being experienced bhroughoub bhe greater parb of the voyage. After a passage of 122 days the vessel arrived ab Wellington on November 7th. After discharging consignments she finally Bailed foi Auckland on November 28th, in charge of Captain Butt, coastal pilob. Fine weather and smooth seas were experienced bhroughoub bhe trip. The vessel visited this port some years aero. She is an iron barque of 671 tons", owned by Sir R. W. Cameron, of Glasgow. On discharge ot her present cargo she will load kauri gum and flax here for New York, undorthe auspices of Messrs Arnold, Cheney and Co. The German cruiser Bussard arrived from Samoa on Dec. 21, dropping anchor in stream aboub 9 a.m. Since leaving Sydney last October tho Bussard has been cruising about the Satnoan group, and finally lefb Apia on bhe 13th insb. for Auckland. A moderate south-east wind prevailed for a day, bub after bhab lighb breezes and smooth seas were experienced to arrival. Since sho was hore last the Bussard has been put on a new commission, and her officers are now as follows :—Captain Winkler in command ; firsb lieutenanb, Capb.-Lieutenanb Bauer; second, Eibner ; bhird, Yon Kameke ; fourth, Retzmann ; cbief engineer, Bertgmann ; paymaster, Vorpahl ; Burgeon, Dr. Piebruaky. The warship is bo stay in porb over Christmas, ana will be docked in the Calliope Dock some bime in January, for a general overhaul. On Dec. 2nd bhe barque Silverßtream arrived from Capetown via Otago Heads. She left Algoa Bay on October 16th, and experienced fine weather and fair wind* till making Owo Heads on Novembor 23rd. She was ordered on to Auckland and met wibh strong southerly winds to the East Cape, which was abeam on bhe 27th. Light westerly winds then set in, alternating with calms, which considerably protracted an otherwise excellent passage. This is the Silveratream's first visit to Auckland. She is a fir-e-looking vessel of 1,160 tons. Her dimensions are : Length, 226fb; breadth, 36"4fb; depth, 22'41b, while her carrying capacity is 1,960 tons. She was built ab Londonderry in 1891, and ia owned by Mr W. P. Herdman. Captain C. E. Bagwell is in command. The Silverstreata was berthed ab bhe Quaysbreeb Jobty. She is to load general cargo for London under charter to tho New Zealand Shipping Company. Tho well-known Tyser steamor Star ofi New Zealand arrived oarly on December 1, from London, via Melbourne and Sydney.' The steamer left London on September 29th, and had more or less disagreeable weabber all bhe way to Sb. Helena, which was reached on October 18th. Here Sir William Corry, owner of the vessel, aud Lady Corry, were landed. After leaving the island, bhe conditions did nob improve, for the 6teamer had to contend against a sequence of hard gales from east-soutk-eatib bo east), with heavy seas. This disagreeable weather continued until crossing the meridian of 50deg. in lab. 41deg. aouth, on which parallel bhe steamer's brack across the Southern Ocean was laid. The wind then set in westerly and strong, and caused a high confused sea. On November Ist a galeoi exceptional violence sprang up from the aouth-wesb, and was accompanied wibh hail squalls. To add to bhe general dis agreoablenesfl, there waß a high tumultuous ■ea, and there was no improvement in the weabher until crossing the meridian ot long. 62deg. easb. The barquentine Delmira, bound from Bluff bo Maiden Island, in ballasb, waß totally wrecked of Cape Palliser on Dec. 8. Captain Hutchingon saved from bhe wreck 25dsovs which he had on board to pay labourers for loading; tho vessel ab Maldea Island. No lives were lost. The Courb of Inquiry found thab the casualty was caused by an inseb current and the wind failing. The captain made some allowance for bhe inset, though not enough, bub as he wonld probably have succeeded in saving bhe vessel bub for bhe wind dropping his certificate was returned. No order was made as to costs.
On December 4bh H.M. surveying ship Penguin arrived from an exbendod surveying cruise in the Ellice and Fiji Groups, anchoring ab bhe man-of-war ground. Sho lefb Sydney.aa far back as the first of May lasb, and visited tbe Ellice Group, taking with her a scientific party sent oub from London to study the formation of atolls and carry oub boring operations on bbc coral reefs. They proceeded bo Funafute, one of bhe islands in bhe Group, where a stay of aboub two months was made, after which tho exploration party was taken on to Fiji. The expedition proved unsuccessful, owing to a want of suitable machinery for boring. From Suva, the Penguin wenb to Rotumah on a surveying trip, returning to Suva to inspect a number of shoals tbab had been reported during tbe la .b 10 or 20 years. Thero were located and sounded, and afber another fortnight's stay in Suva, the Penguin finally lefb for Auckland on November 23rd. She meb with moderately line weather on bhe trip up. When off the Poor Knights Islands, a search was made for bhe Vision Rock, which was reported aboub 11 years ago, bub proved unsuccessful, as no indication whatever of the rock was bo bo found. The Penguin lefb for Hobarb on the 7bh, where the Australian Squadron will rendezvous for Christmas.
