ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council waa held in committee lasb night. The Mayor (Mr D. Sutherland) said that as that wa« the last meeting he would attend before the Muyoral election he would like to acquaint tho Council with the official reporb of bho borough's finances. When he book office, two years ago, there was a debit balance of £170, besides a sum owing to the Charitable Aid Board of £125 During his first year of office theao debts wero paid, beside all liubilitiea incurred, and when he waa re-elected last November each deparbmonb ahuwed a credit balance. During the year now closing tho expanses of the borough had been kept well within the income, the general account showing a credit balance ab the present time of £100. The waterworks account, £450, 'oeaidea having just paid over £70 towards the cost of the new pipes now due for the water extension. His Wornhip also stared that the general rate this year would produce between £500 and £600, over £400 of which waa still to be ,paid, and would prove ample bo carry on all the works of the borough. Captain Richardeon, town clerk, informed the Council thab he had been instructed by the Audit Inspector to enforce the new law which required that 10 per cent, ahull be added to all rates not paid within six months after being struck, otherwise tho accounts would not be passed. General satisfaction was expressed by the Council ab bhe very satisfactory state of bhe borough account*. The Mayor road the following lotber, which ho hod senb to the Minister of Lands: —"Sir, —It has been brought bo my nobice that pert.ons oubaide of Onehunga have been applying for a water right bo our springs. 1 most respectfully ask thab you will nob granb bho above requesb wibhout the consent of tho Borough Council of Onehunga."
