Thb sixth annual show under the auspices of the Auckland Provincial Agricultural and Pastoral Association opened to-day at Potter's Paddock, Epaoui, under somewhat. unfavourable circumstances aa to the weather, the morning being overcast and rain threatening. The show ground wao damp, too, from the receub rains, but in spite oi this there was a large number of interested spectators present when the grounds were opaned to the public this morning. During tho last two or three days ft large staff has been at work making the necessary arrangements for the show and under tho careful supervision of Mr E. Hall (secretary) and Mr W. Dunwoodie (ground manager) the preparations fo* tbe display wea complete and very g»tiaf»ctory. The general arrangements are much the same as in previous years, except for the facb that the horticultural and flower show is held in what is known at) tha "local industry" shed near the grandstand, and the large marquee in the paddock previouelj devoted to flowers is now a lunchaon tent. Taken as a whole, %h& Show to-day is a most satisfactory improveraenb on the previous years, the ex. htbita being far in exceas of the number shown at previous exhibitions of this aort in Auckland. There are in all 1,350 exhibits, made wp as follows:—Horses, 313 entries (increase of 80 on lasb year); cattle 127 (slight decrease, about 15); sheep, 139 (increaee of 35 entries on last year's i show) j pigs, 28 (slight increase); dairy produce, 230 (a consklerabje increase bo laab year), and horticultural exhibits, flowers, and fruit, 212 entriea, a very large increase. In the above figures, the chief increase is in horse stock, iv which thore is a splendid show. The stsock all round aro in tirgt-claaa condition, and keen competition took place in nearly every entry. The general increase id live ■'* this year was go great that it> wa* i i naceaeary to eracb come 200 additional pens for the accommodation of the exhibits. In tho dairy produce department tho increase was a very pleasing one, there being 91 exhibits of butter alone, as against the previous record of 70, In j tho horticultural lino there was an especially fino display of citrous fruits from Whangarei. We may mention, in connection with the stock oxhibits, that there are in the show the largest number of horses ever shown at one exhibition in thia colony, tbe previous record being 269 horses at a recent Southern show. In local industries there was a good Bhow the exhibits being referred to elsewhere, and the exhibition of machinery and agricultural implements was a moat interesting one. Amongst the numerous attractions of tho chow are high jump competitions for hunters and the visual riding competiliona to-morrow. Judging started at ten o'clock this morning, and tho reeults up to the time we went to press to-day are appended. The show will be open tomorrow, and special arrangemeuts as to the train and tram farea are mado for the occasion.

LOCAL INDUSTRIES

Mr John Broady lias a tine show of stoves and ranges in a tent. A feature is a sfb hutol range, with two ovena fitted with circulating boiler and hob water apparatus. Thia was in full working order and attracted conaiderablo attention. A 4fb kitchen range for a private residence, farm house range, and country house stove were also features of the collection.

Legge and Co. exhibit evaporated fruit and vegetables in a handsome case, and Or. Neil, of Welleeley -street, has & good display of gilded, silvered, nickel, and lacquared electro plate ware; while iVlr \\, Parkinson exhibits butterscotch.

A very fine display was made of canned and bottled fruits by the Auckland Fruib Depofc and Orchard Agency, Shorfclandntveet. The splendid size and appearance of the fruits in bottles attracted general Attention, and shewed the capabilities of the Auckland province for fruitgrowing purposes. The whole of the exhibit is of local production, and reflects credit on the firm.

Messrs Fletcher, Humphreys and Co., of Chriatcburch, had on exhibition samples of champagne cider in bottle and in ca.«k manufactured by them. This exhibit was shown by their Auckland agent, Mr VV. Blysh, of the Orchaid Agency, Shortlandstreet). A cask of this fine cider was on tap for sampling purposes, which musb have proved a splendid advertisement) for the firm.

In hams and bacon a feature is the splendid exhibit) of Messrs A. and J. Me Farlane, of Dunedin. The quality ia all (hat could be wished for as a pattern to local curera. Thia exhibit is in charge of BsU Bros.

Messrs J. Bycroffc and Co., Limitod, •bow an excellent exhibit of goods manufactured by them at their mills and factory, Shortland street, consisting of plain and fancy biscuits, Snowdrift flour, pearlina porridgQ meal, wheatmeal, etc. Their vrejlknown biscuit labels have a very pleasing effect, and form a contrast with glass fronted show tins, and several handeomeihow oases. They also show several samples of very prime wheat grown in the Marlbprough district, which are used in the manufacture of their favourite brands of fiqur. These should be of special inter•«o to our local farmers, as showing to whalt a degree of perfection wheat can be brought under favourable conditions. -

Messrs Kempbhorne, Proseer and Co.'s sxbibit is, as usual, one of the features of %\iq Show, It appeals to farmers specially, the Weßbfield manures having now become quite a boueehold word amongst farmers in the Norfeh. Island of New Zealand. The exhibib comprises all lines of these wellknown manures—pure bone dusts, bone float) and blood, high grade superphosphates, sulphate of ammonia and special tnanuret) to meeb the requirements of all crops. Lookipg round we see samples of the pure linseed oil oake manufactured by this Company in two grades, fine crushed and in the rough, also a number of farmers' requisites such as sheep dips (Cooper's and Zealandia), bluestone, eulphate of iron, rennets and annattos in all Bizes, bird poisons, caustic soda, potash, etc., also bbc highly-prized brand of mirror blacking, and the two celebratod lines of baking powder (Kiwi and Universal). The exhibit ia shown in a house which ia erected in sections Qn the ground, and is really a yery convenient arraagemenb for the purpose used. The whole affair ia tastefully arranged, and is well worthy of She attention of farmers and the general public. The Company's works manager is in charge, »nd w}ll be glad to meeb all and auadry and giro full information.
