PAEROA NOTES.

Fortctnatus. —Yosfcerday the ground known as King No. 2 and' Forbunatusi at Waitekauri was for the third time applied for by a man'named Clouston. This is the ground awarded by Warden Kenny to the Fortunatus applicant last -Court day, but the license for which was directed by him to bo held back for l* day a to enable the King No. 2 party to objocb should they think fit. This last application betokens some frosh development. Tho ground appears to be highly prized, as the total area is only 6'J acres. King No. 2 waa refused on Tuesday, and tho Fortunatus may be appealed against, in which case the laft applicant will have a chance. Waverley.—This morning, hearing that gold had been got in the Waverley mine at Karangahako, I went out with bho object of seeing if such was the case, and found-that the reef met'last week in tho crosscut, after being driven on for a fow feet, had improved greatly in appearance, the stone being heavily charged .with mineral, whilst several large pieces broken out by the manager showed gold in the stono. The lode is over four feet wide, dipping considerably to tho west, and the quartz carries blue aud black veins of sulphides. The country carrying tho reef is blue andesite, and excellent ground for driving. Though the.shute of gold has not beon proved for any distance yet, the find is a most important ono, and clearly demonstrates that the Waverley mines contain runs of rich ore. It will be recollected that a vein of quartz was cut in bhis drive some weeks ago, also showing _rold freely, and the manager then anticipated thab tliis reef when cut would be found gold bearing. It is pleasing to find bis prediction verified. The lode is running into the Woodstock mine on the' north ond. and is near the eastern boundary of the Waverley, so that the latter will have a great stretch of rest considering its dip. Recently MrE.J.Nanki.vell, mining expert, visited/the Waverley mine, and had a look over the workings and position of tbe property. He was very favourably impressed with what he saw.
