CITY COUNCIL.

Ttfß ordinary meeting of the Auckland Ciby Council was held lasb night. Present: Mr J: J. Holland (the Mayor), and Cru. Hewson, Stichbury. Hesketh, Cairns, Kidd, Glover, Farrell, Trenwith, Garratb. In bhe absence of the Towu Clerk, Mr Gdrrie performed the dnbies.

Thk CD. Act.—Mr Hugh Pollen, on behalf of the Acting Colonial Secretary, wrote that the resolution of the Council urging the Government to appoint a Royal CdmmisiiioK of Inquiry as bo the best means of checking the spread of venereal diseases amongst) bobb Boxes, and the ravages caused thereby in the colony, would receive consideration.— Letter received. CuRKAN STREET GOLLY DSAtNAGK. — Mr Jas. Maxwell wrbte drawing attention ba the defective condition ot drainage loading down the gully and through his property into Curran-sbroet. He asUod that aa the drainage from eleven properties was laid down ao tho Corporation expense thab the Council continue the same on through his property to Curran-street). The Engineef reported thab the Council bad no drainage flowing 1060 the property, and that the gully was a natural water course. Any drainage from properties named had been done by bhe owners ab their own expanse.— The Council resolved that a reply be sent do Mr Maxwell in accordance with the Engineer's report,. \ Drainage. —Mr Robert! Currie wrote applying to have the aewer connected between Croan and Canada streets, Ne»ton. v —On the motion of the Mayor ib was renalved fcbafi the work be dona ab once.—Cr. Garratb spoke in supporb. Removal of Night-soil.—Mr Frarieis Simpson, of Church-street, Pomonby, wrote relative to the removal of nighb-soil. He eaid the present eyatem was an insanitary one, dangerous to the public health and ofiamive in the extreme. He was prepared to undertake under certain conditions a day service, as carried out in other colonies.—Referred bo bhe Stroota Commit) tee.

Juvenile Immorality. — Replies were read that the Newton and Parfiell Borough Councils wdro willing to co-operate with the City Council in any Rename for the suppression of juvenile Immorality. — The letters were received.—On the motion of Mr Farrell it was r«solvod that the outside boroughs be' asked to moot a special meeting of tho Council in conference on Wednesday evening next at 7 o'clock. Accommodation Paddock. —Mr G. Knight, butcher, applied for a renewal of the leaso of the accommodation paddock at Western Springs for a further term of three years at a rental ot £55 per annum.—l: was resolved'toiinform- \Mr• KnighbHthat before tho lease expired tendera- would be called. Petition.—Cr. Trenwith presented a petition thab a main drain be pub down in Cambridge-street, off Newton Road.— Referred to the Streets Committee.

Waiboa South Falls.—Messrs S. Vaile and .Sons wrote that ait Electrical Engineering Company were in treaty for the Wairoa South Falls, and the acquiring of them might pass away from the city. They asked the Council to see their way to enter into negotiations for tho purchase of the property. —A motion that the letter bo referred bo the Waterworks Commibtee was losb, and an amendment thab the letter bo received was carried. Rkmoval ok Lamp.—The recommendation of tbe South Ward members that the lamp ab the corner of Lower Vincent street and Cook-street (north side) be removed to bho opposite or south side wai adopted. Right of Way.—'Messrs Samuel Vaile and Son, on behalf of R. and W< Hellftby and executors of will of J. C. Seccombe, wrote asking the consent of the Couucil to a right of way they had granted to one another from Cross-streets to Karangahipe Road for foot and wheel traffic— Roterred to the Ward members to report.

Consideration. —Mr G. Knight; wrote submitting bbac he was entitled to some Confederation afc the bands of the Council in the way of compensation for loss and trouble, through sinking borea for water being put on his accommodation paddock for cattle ab the Western Springs by Council's employees. He asked that £15 be granted him.—The Engineer reported that it was an extraordinary claim, and that tho Council had dona nothing beyond what they had a right bo do under tho lease.—lb was resolved to refer the matter to the Legal Committee to report). Returning Officer.—Tho resignation of Mr James Halyday, junior, as Returning Officer, was received, and it was decided to invite applications for the position. Streets Committee. — This Committee recommended :—(1) That the drain in Sars-field-sbreeb be continued to culvert at present being constructed in CurranBtreet, the work to be done by ward labour. (2) Re deposibof refuse, etc., Hamilton Rd.: That the place be fenced in accordance with Engineer's suggestion.— The report was adopted. Legal Committee. —This Committee recommended : (1) Letter from Secretary Gas Company re incandescent gas lighting Library: Thab incandescenb installation, Costing £120 lbs 9d, be retained, and that otfer to efficiently maintain same at £2 per month be accepted for a term of two years. (2) Letter from M. Bradley re permit tramway VVaitakerei Domain : Thab application be declined.—The Mayor laid he was sorry the Committee had sent in the recommendation relative to the permit for tramway ab Waitakerei Domain. The application had evidently been misunderebood, as the permit only applied to a smaller reserve some distance from the main reserve, and as all other parties con* cerned had given permission for the tram* way, ho thought it would bean injustice on the part of the Council if they did not accede to the request. He moved, "That the clause be amended to the etfecb that the permit be granted ab an annual rental of £5, subject to bhs approval of the Government." — Cr. Hesketh thought this would be casting a slight on the Legal Committee. He moved as an amendment, "That the matter be referred back bo the Committee;" — Tho Mayor's motion bo amend the clause was carried and the report adopted. Municipal Conference.— The Mayor reported relative to the business done at tho Municipal Conference. He also apologised for the Town Clerk, who attended as a delegate, nob being present at the meebing. No Quorum.—At this stage Cr. Cairn* drew attention thab a quorum of the Council waa nob present, and the proceeding! ended.
