The Premier, replying to a deputatio 11 of municipalities, said he was afraid hs could do. nothing unless the parties interested were agreeable, and the miners promised not to come out. He would devote himself to bringing about a settlement. Ultimately Mr .Reid wired to the miners to say if the strike notices were withdrawn he would be happ/y to use his utmost endeavour to briDg about an amicable settlement. The municipalities also passed resolutions asking the men to refrain from extreme steps pending the Premier's efforts to bring about a settlement.
