BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Board of Education was held to-day. Present : Mr R. Udy (Chairman), Rev. J, Rates, and Messrs Lambe, Muir, Luke, Wrighb, Harris, Woodward, Cooper.

Chairman's Rkpokt.—Tho Chairman's report stated that allotments 9, 10, and 11 have been purchased from Mi J. Stewart from £125 as an addition to echool site. Tenders have been accepted as follows :— fl. W. Bartlett, £160 for school building at Taupaki; H. W. Bartlotb. £325 for additions to Coromandol school.—The report was adopted,

Teachers.—The Chairman in bis report stated the following resignations bad been received : —Miss M. H. Nixon, teacher, Riverhead School ; Miss S. A. Reid, assistant), Karangahake School; Miss M. W. Harris, ex pupil teacher, late Otahuhu School; Miss S." A. Mandeno, pupil teacher. Bayfield School; Miss M. J. Mander, pupil teacher, Porb Albert School.

Dr. Rydkr.—The Chairman paid thab he had been waited upon by Dr. Ryder, who wished to give a health lecture to the older girls in the schools. The only expense would be the hiring of the hall. Ib was agreed to give Dr,Ryder permission to hold the lecture subject: to approval of commibteos.

Examinations in Science and Akt.— The Committee appointed to consider and report upon request from Minister for Board to undertake arrangemonta for local examinations in -science and arb under the Department, South Kensington, London, submitted their report. They recommended the Board to undertake the arrangements for the examinations' on the terms stated in the Minister's letter.—The report of the Committee was adopted. Ponsonby Schools.—The roporb of the Teachers Selection Committee was adopted. The report stated that for the position of assistant at the Ponsonby Central School tho following names had been submitted bo the Committee :—Misses K. Keesing, K. P. Mulvany, M. Maxwell. A. S. Hamlin, M..G. Harris and F. E. Thompson. Bayfield (assistant) : The same. The Committeo also recommended that the Ponsonby Committee should be informed in answer to their request for the appointment of Mr F. G. Crookes to tho Ponsonby School, that Mr Flavell had resumed duty, the period of his leave of absence having expired. Canvassing.—ln accordance with notice of motion, Mr Luke moved, "That the following clause be added to the regulations of the Board : Any teacher personally canvassing mombera of the Board, or members of a School Committee, regarding an appointment shall be disqualified as a candidate for that appointment," In speaking to the motion Mr Luke said canvassing had boen carried on to such a degree that it wan degrading. The motion was framed in the interests of country teachers. —Mr Muir opposed the motion. He said tho Board could stop personal'canvassing, but candidates would geb their wires or other friends to work in their favour,—Od being pub to the Boad, Mr Luke's motion was carried. Hamilton East.—Mr Isaac Coates was appointed by the Board to complete the Hamilton East School Committee. Newton East School.—Two tenders were received for removal of class room from Howe-street to Newton East School. Mr J. Ellingham (£186) was accepted. Election.—lb was announced that the following candidates had been nominated for election for the purpose of filling the vacancies to be caused by the retirement of Messrs Cooper, Udy and Wrighb :— H. F. Cooper (nominated byl9cotrmibbeee), Theo. Cooper (nominated by 15 committees), M. Kirkbride (nominated by 10 Cominitteeß), R. Udy (nominabed by 18 Commibteea), M. Whitebead (nominated by 26 Committees), and J. H. Wright (nominated by 28 Committees). It was stated that thorn were seven nominations, bub that of Mr J. D. McKenzie was nob valid. Messrs Udy Cooper and Wright refused bo express an opinion.—The nomination of Mr McKenzie was declared invalid, and the election fixed for 10th March. Mr O'Donohue's Complaint.—A communication wae read from Mr 1). O'Donohue acknowledging receipt of copies of resolutions passed by the Board relative to his charges of alleged unfair abstracts of Inspectors reports. He asked for copy of a second resolution. The Board agreed to forward the following :—" That in future any communications from the Minister relative to a teacher's school work be added to the teacher's record." Chapel-street School.—The question of enlargement of Chapel-street School was referred to the City Schools Committee. The Chairman stated that the lowest tender for the work (£740) had been refused.
