THAMES MINING SUMMARY.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
Thames, Wednesday. January is invariably a quieb month a 8 regards mining matters, and tho present month ia no exception to the rule. This itduo solely to the holidays observed at Christmas and New Year, and it ib only during the lasb couple of weeks that operations are in full swing in bhe whole ot the mines. The outlook, however, is ex ceodingly cheering, and the year promises to be a prosperous one. The mosb imporbanb evenb of the month has been the receipt of a cable yostorday by tho local representative of Reiliy and Co., London, announcing that the Queen of Beauty, Deep Sinker, and Deep Levels Consolidated properties had been registered in one company. Mr IT. A. Gordon, Inspecting Engineer of the Mines Department, ia at present on a visit to the Tbamea with the Hon. A. J. Cadmtin, Minister of Mines, and tho purty to-day visited the Queen of Beauty shaft for the purpose, ib is understood, of enabling Mr Gordon to consult with the local owners regarding certain works of magnitude which are aboub to be commenced, including bhe stripping and enlarging of the present shaft, which is down a depth of 740 feeb. As soon as the necessary plans and specifications have been drawn up, tenders will be called for this work. Now thab the company is registered, operations will doubtless be vigorously commenced. The company has a brighb future beforo it, and the general public are so impressed with the value of the property and bhe strong probability of developments of greab importance being made, thab operations will be watched with the keenest interest. The English syndicate which recently took over the New Moanataiari G.M. Company's mine have commanced work in real earnest. They aro of course mainly of a prospecting nature, bub aro being carried on Jn such favourable localities thab some discovery of importance is almost certain to result at no distant date. The Tararu Creek G.M. Company's mine is looking fairly well, but it is understood thab some difnculby is experienced in bhe successful breabmenb of the ore. With the view of if possible overcoming this, a series of experiments aro likely to ,bo made at an early dato. The prospects of the Victoria G.M. Company's mine have further improved since the opening of bho year, a few pounds of nice picked stone having been obtained from the new reef and another leader immediately they wero intersected in the crosscub from No. 1 level. Strong colours of gold havo been seen freely distributed through the quartz, which is of excellent grade. The country is really excellent, and ib will, indeed, be surprising if a " find" of importance is nob made as operations progress upon this lode. There is nothing now bo reporb from the Waiotahi, Alburnia, May Queen, New Whau, Clunes, Cambria, Monowai, Golden Point, and the various other mines.
