COSTLEY TRAINING INSTITUTE.

ANNUAL MEETING

The annual meeting in connecbion with bhe Coatley Training Institution was held on Friday evening, January 17th, at bhe building, Richmond Road. Colonel Haultain, one of the trustees, presided in the absence of Captain Daldy (Chairman of trustees). There was a large attendance, including a number of old pupils of the Institution. Among the visitorH presenb were His Worship the Mayor (Mr J, J. Holland), tbe Mayoress (Mrs Holland), Rev. 11. F. Sommervillo, and Miss Haultain. The dining-room, where the meeting was held, was tastefully decorated for the occasion with ferns.

Mr William Thorne, Hon. Secretary, read apologies for non-attfindanco from Captain Daldy, Rev. R. F. Macnicol, Mr S. Clarke Johnstone, and W. Miller and Son. The last-named n'rm stated bhat thoy had h;ul several of the boys from bhe Institution in their employ, and now had three, and thoy were pleased to say thab they never had steadier or better-behaved lads.

The proceedings were opened with devotional exercises, and the singing of the hymn " We're Marching to Zion."

Tho annual report and balance-sheet for 1895 was read by Mr W. Thorne and adopted. We make the following extracts : " We have on tho roll six girls and thirty boys. Of the girls, four are employed us domestic servants, and two at factory work. They are all boarded oub with reputable families, as our presenb accommodation hero will nob admit of their rosidenco on the premises. Of the boys eleven aro employed in various trades in town, eight are in situation* wibh farmers in tho country, one is ab sea, and ten abtend day school."

Tho statement of accounts, for the year ending December 31st, 1895, was read as follows :—

Revenue Account.—Dr. : To maintenance, £701 8s ; boya' allowances, £22 8a lOd : repairs and improvements, £56 8-> 8d ; genoral expenses, viz., telephone, £8 10^; auditor, £12 12a ; agent's commission on interest collected, £16 ls ; petty expenses, £6 ; insurance, £■' 15s ; rates, £4 I2s ; balance surplus for year, £148 13s 7d ; total, £980 9* Id. Cr. : By interest, £801 5n 4d ; boya' earnings, £179 3s 9d ; totnl, £980 9-< Id.

Balance-sheet. — Dr. :To capital, viz., E. Costlev bequest, £12,150 ; R. Hodge boquesb, £672 3< 9d ; Savings Bank trust account, £256 6s 7d ; surplus 3lsb December, 1894, £1,468 19« 5d ; surplus for year per revenue account, £148 13« 7d ; total, £14.606 3s 4d. Cr. : By sundry loans on mortgage, £9,300: interest! due on same; £138 13s Id; buildings and freehold property, £3,991) 6s 6d ; cash in Saving? Bunk, £266 6b 7rl ; cash on hxed depo-it;£soo ; ca?h ir. Bank of Now Zealand, £498 7a 5d ; cash in hands of mauager, £5 9<i 9J ; total, £11,696 3s 4d. The accounts were auditod by Mr O. B. Waymouth. Tho Chairman moved the adoption of the roporb and balance sheet. Ho^ was glad to cay they were able _to render v good awjunut of the institution's position. The original sum left by Mr Costlev waa £12 350, and they had a further sum of £672 given to them by Mra Rohacca Hodre exclusively for tho bonefib of girte, By tho State a certain sum waa authorised to be spent of tho original bequest on buildings, bub they had been -able to spend that sum and over oub of the proceeds of the inberesb, of which their was a surplus. However, they could nob look forward to large rates ot interest in the future, bub he was pleased to say they had a surplus of interest amounting to £1,617 13a, which could be spent in buildings or land. Of the boya earnings, £179 3s 9d had been placed bo the credib of the inatibution, and the remainder bad bean placed in the Savings Bank to be claimed by them when they lefb the institubion. To some of bhe boys who had left there had been paid as much as £60 and £70.
