LOCAL GOVERNING BODIES.
Tho firsb meeting of bho new Thames Drainage Board was held on the morning of January 21sb ab Mr D. G. MacDonnell's office whon bhere were presenb Messrs G. S. Kissling (Chairman), R. Coomer, W. S. Wilßon, T. Radford, J. T. Clarke, J. Macfarlane and P. A. Whito, The firsb business was bhe election of Chairman for the ensuing year Mr Kissling being unanimously re-elected. The only other business was the assessment of bhe monbhly conbribuiions payable by bhe various companies whose mines aro situated within the drainage area. Tho estimated amounb required waa sob down ab £-1,560. Somo discussion arose as to the assessment of tho Cardigan mino, which was ultimately fixed at £15. Coomer's assessment was raised from £5 18a 6d to £6 10s, and the Kuvunui from £4 18a 6d to £7 10s on the motion of Mr F, A. White. Thia was opposed by Mr Clarke, bub ib was poinbed oub the Kurunui was now working aba lower level, lb was suggested that tho Quean of Beauty contribution bo increased from £10 to £15, but Mr James MeFarlane objected on the ground that no work would ba done in tho mine that required pumping for some timo yeb. He aaid bhab although tha machinery was on its way out it would be soma time before ib would be erected and ready to work, and at brat ib would really assist bho Big Pump. Ultimately the assesstnenba wore fixed as follows :— Cambria, £25 4s; Victoria, £29 2s 9d; Hazelbank, £29 2s 9d; Coomer's, £6 10s; Kurunui, £7 10; Cardigan, £15 : Moanataiari, £29 10s 8d ; Waiotahi, £53 15s ; May Quoen, £135 ; Queen of Beauty £10 por month ; and tho Borough Council contribution of £10 per month, and County Council contribution of £20 por month, matins- a total income for bhe year of £4,400. The usual formal resolution making the contributions payable monthly was passed, and it was also resolved on the motion of Mr Wilson, seconded by Air Clark, "That the clerk give fcho necessary notice of bhe striking ot tho rats, and thab the Board sib to hear appeals ab 11 o'clock on Friday, tho 3lst instant."
