KUAOTUNU NOTES.

(FBOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Kuaotcnu, this day.

The acceptances for the athletic eporfcß were received on Friday evening. The Commifabee havaevery reason to be satisfied with the number. Very great interest is taken, as tbera are several contestants from Australia aad other parts. The indefatigable Secretary (Mr S: Gribbie) has spared no pains in getting everything in order, and with a fine day there will be a large concourse of people from surrounding districts, viz.? Coromandel, Mercury Bay, Tairua, etc., a good day's sports guaranteed. The local band has been engaged. The highest tender for the gafcas amouuted to £11. The township was excited and surprised by tha appearance of & cwohorse brake introduced by. Mr McSheffrey to accommodate fewonly. A number of the leading citizens were by invitation driven to Bevoral mines. This shows the growing importance of the place. I understand the Northern Company will run an excursion trip to Kuaotuuu during the approaching holiday reason. I strongly urge on people of your city and elsewhere to avail themselves of the opportunity, and can vouch for their being hospitably treated by the Bonifaces, and managers of different mines will be only too happy to show them over their properties. The new hotel half-way to tha upper township is now nearly completed. Mr Nicholson I believe, will havo the management, a gentleman who baa had considerable experience «b hotel proprietor. I visited several properties during tha week, and was well pleased with what I saw. There can be no doubb that this field is only in its infancy. What is sadly needed is mo\:o battery power. In some of the mines I visited good quartz is being thrown away, which I believp would yield one and a-half ounces to the ton. This is specially tha case in Waiabaia. Some atone shown me by the courbeous and obliging manager (Mr Bennett) surprised me for its richness. This valuable property is now well opened up, amd could supply a battery itself. Carnage.—Under the supervision of Captain liicharda four men are employed. A nice reef ha 3 been cut during the week a foot wide.

Empire.—This property is supervised by Mr D. Regan, two men bein<* employed at present trenching and prospecting. Golden Anchor.—Captain Richards is the appointed manager. From the prospects of this property I am surprised chares are bo low.

Gladys.—Captain Richards is also the 8U per vigor of this mine. The four men employed are working on a reef, and from the situation of tho ground I should certainly think it good property.

Midas.—Captain Richards is supervisor. Tho underground manager, Mr W. Rowe, is an experienced Thames miner. They are in splendid sandstone country and working on a good teef. I expect at any moment to be informed of something excellent.

Ktjaotunp. — This is also under the management ot Captain Richards. The drive is in iirsb-claaa sandstone country and working both oaafc and wesfc. This is a valuable property.

Gbeat United.—Mr Feoley is managing this property. He kindly showed me over the ground, and is at presenb working on a good reef, which will probably prove to be *,bhe Victoria lode. He pounded some stone in my presence, and excellent dish prospects were obtained. They have a first class battery cite.

Great Bp.itain\—This ground lies to the oast of Great United. I understand this property is being floated in Napier, and from its situation it should become valuable.

Great Western. —I wonb over this property with Capt. Richard aud Mr A. Peebles, Ib ie bounded on the north by the Clansman, south by the Aocot and Phcenix, east by tbe lnvicta, and west by the Firefly. Old workings were shown me and I believe good prospects were obtained some ;,ears ago;
